Players with ClubCorp connections steal the spotlight at PGA Tour tournaments
BY KATE WAHNSCHAFFE — Fall 2017
Jordan Spieth, who grew up playing golf at Brookhaven Country Club near Dallas, pocketed two impressive wins this past summer. In June, he hit a 60-foot shot from a bunker and holed out to beat Daniel Berger in a playoff at the Travelers Championship. Then in July, just days before his 24th birthday, he scored his third major win at the 2017 Open Championship — becoming only the second player to win three different major tournaments before turning 24.
But Spieth wasn’t the only player with ClubCorp ties making headlines at recent PGA Tour events:
- Austin Connelly, the first ClubCorp-sponsored player and a member of Hackberry Creek Country Club in Irving, Texas, scored an impressive third-round 66 and ultimately tied for 14th at the 2017 Open at Royal Birkdale, his first major.
- Xander Schauffele, a member of Bernardo Heights Country Club in San Diego, Calif., birdied the final hole of the Greenbrier Classic in July to grab his first PGA Tour victory.
- Also in July, Kyle Stanley, a member of Canterwood Golf & Country Club in Gig Harbor, Wash., won the Quicken Loans National in a playoff against Charles Howell III, securing his second PGA Tour win.
