“I remember growing up trying to save every creature, great and small.”
Who he is: Director and chief medical officer for Ryan Hospital, the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine’s teaching hospital in Philadelphia. He oversees medical services and daily operations for the hospital, which handles about 37,000 patient visits each year.
Focused from the start: Born in the Philippines, he knew by age 6 he wanted to be a veterinarian. “I grew up with a menagerie of pets. Discovering that science has the ability to heal fascinated me — and especially to heal animals that I cared for.”
On the front lines: A board-certified veterinary surgeon, Mison continues to do surgeries at the hospital. “By being able to do clinics and still perform surgeries, I have a better grasp of how the hospital is running. Working in the trenches as a clinician helps me as an administrator.”
Caregiving: “Our mission at Ryan Hospital is to enrich the lives of the pets and the people who love them through collaboration, discovery, teaching, and clinical excellence.”
